‘My American Dream’ – liner notes

October 26, 2021

If you look at what’s going on in the world these days, it’s easy to imaging how hard things are for many, many people. In fact, all of us!

At the gas station one day I was waiting to buy something. It was taking forever since there was like one person working the counter and there was a big line of people getting lottery tickets, scratch offs, and whatever else.

I was getting impatient at first. But, I started thinking that maybe getting lucky with a lottery ticket was about the only way for the people in that line to have a chance for their own ‘American Dream’.

I guess that thought and image stuck in my mind because one morning I picked up my guitar and the words ‘my American Dream’ came out. Songs happen like that. Anyway, once I had that concept for the song, the rest was pretty easy.

The Mix

For while I was trying to get other mix engineers involved, but working remotely with a mixer is a challenge. And if you want to have lots of creative time, it gets really expensive.

No one will ever accuse me of being a great mixer, but I know what I what to hear from a perspective side of things. I just lack the ability of the great ones to get those sounds we love.

I spend a crazy amount of time reading and watching videos of famous engineers. And then I try to ‘steal’ some of their tricks!

Well, since they show their tricks, I guess it’s not stealing. Anyway, one trick I used on this mix is an Andy Wallace bass process. And I think the bass on this song is great. Thank’s Andy. Of course, anything Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound touches makes everything sound even better!

Hope you dig this one!

The Lyrics

It’s been a hard life
Working two jobs and just gettin’ by
Caffeine, cigarettes and wine
20 bucks for the lottery line

Where is my American dream
My eyes can barely see
These calloused hands about to bleed
It seems so far away from me
Feelin’ down and deceived
Gettin’ harder to believe
Yah, my American Dream

She saves me from myself
When I’m low and just wanna run
She feeds me with hope that I can be
Anyone

Where is my American dream
My eyes can barely see
These calloused hands about to bleed
It seems for far away from me
Feelin’ down and deceived
Gettin’ harder to believe
